Can anyone tell me what that little black ring is? It broke/fell off sometime ago. Just recently I've been hearing click sounds(on the drive side) on the down stroke when I stand up to pedal. I exchanged pedals and it still makes the same noise. Thanks.

I rode it today and noticed that when I stand up and ride i can hear the clicking with the right pedal in the down position, but here's the thing, when I sit back down on the saddle, I hear 1 more click and it sounds like its coming from the seat post???

Yep, the flange of the plastic retaining ring has broken off. If you remove the crankarm, you should be able to ride without it making noise unless there's something else that's wiggling.

thats driveside, sure it's just a plastic support cup? well, some cartridge BBs are backwards... but looks metallic depending how much spline is left, that broken cup could be a nightmare to remove. def seek professional help at local bike shop

Thanks for the link. I'll have to grease the seat post and see if the sound goes away.

I tested the cranks and don't feel any wiggling. The metal ring makes a pinging sound in addition to the click click click when I press down on the pedals out of the saddle.

Since I like to save money and do things myself, I assume I need a crank puller and a bottom bracket remover? The bike is a 1991/92 specialized rockhopper comp with a square taper crank.

I'm going to guess that the crankarm is wiggling its way loose. There's a number of things that can cause clicks & creaks, and they can make you crazy trying track them down.

I would first simply tighten the center bolt on the crankarm, which requires a 14mm socket. Ideally you would do this with a torque wrench because it requires 30 to 40 foot-pounds. That's a lot to pull on the average 9-inch ratchet.

If the noise doesn't go away, get the crankarm puller and the bottom bracket tool. Take everything apart:

Clean all the metal-to-metal contact surfaces (crankarm-to-spindle, pedal threads, all nuts and bolts), put fresh grease on all of them, and reassemble. Torque to spec if you have a torque wrench:

If that doesn't clear up your clicking, start looking at other stuff. Bottom bracket noises are notoriously had to track down.

Here's something interesting...A few days ago I noticed the headset(?) was loose but for some reason didn't do anything about it...I guess I like to ride dangerously.

So, yesterday, before my ride, I thought, why don't you fix that loose headset? So I got out the wrench and tightened it up. At the time I wasn't thinking about the bottom bracket issues I was having...until I took it for a spin. Got up out of the saddle and on to those pedals and didn't hear a peep. Apparently the noise was coming from the headset. Of course it doesn't help that I'm deaf in one ear, so maybe that's why I couldn't detect where the sound was coming from.

Anyway, I think I still need to get those tools and check out the bb. It's probably well overdue for some new grease, or, at least a new one since that metal ring has popped off. Yes?
