Installing new Kool Stop pads in Universal Brakes - HOW TO?

Friends,

I searched and didn't see this covered anywhere ... probably because the answer is super simple. I recently bought some new salmon Kool Stop pads for use in my Universal Mod. 77 brakes. However ... the pads came without the metal holders. Looking at my existing pads (the original Universal pads - hard as a rock), I can't see how I could take out the old pads and install the new ones.

What am I missing? Should I have bought the holders in addition to the pads? Is there some way to open the existing holders to replace the pads that I am unaware of?

Thank you in advance!

If you bought just the pads (piece of rubber with dovetail back) These are specific to holders, probably Shimano, but they also make others.

You could buy KS pads with holders as a set, then buy pads only later. Or you could buy one-piece shoes with hardware, such as a KS Supra. Be aware that your slots are made for 6mm hardware, so some kits (such as made for Campagnolo) won't fit.

If you had a Campagnolo brake with the slip in pad, then you could, but you did say you have a Universal brake , old, & Italian, but another company entirely..

Suggest: Buy the Koolstop Continental .. pad and mounting stud molded as 1 piece

They are, but the holders are different, and have different dovetail dimensions. Those will only fit a Campagnolo holder.

I even managed to get them to work on the CLB side-pulls on my old Brompton Mk2

took some drink can aluminum shim wrapped around the stud as the slot for the pads was wider than 6mm.
the shims centered the stud in the wider slot.

What alternatives will do the trick?
I would like to get red coloured pads.
Weimann, Schwinn, dia comp, etc... will these or others work?
Thanks

I have Mod 61 calipers and have simply replaced the whole unit as suggested by @fietsbob. One of the dimensions you need to pay attention to for replacement units is the pad to mounting surface distance. Some are less than original and will cause you headaches when trying to adjust.

Will the Koolstop inserts for Mafac holders also work in the Universal Mod 77 holders and similar holders?

The Koolstop Continental pad+holder work but do change the "look" of the brakeset.

I agree "jyl" I would like to maintain this look (see attached). Any suggestions??? How do I install replacement pads for this brake set?
I would like to keep the look of the metal shoe. Does kool stop make anything with a threaded stud that fit these shoes? See attached.
Please help!!!

Thanks

The MAFAC pads have exactly the same bevel angle and width as Campagnolo NR/SR, but they're longer. There is no reason to believe that they will fit Universal holders.

You could try to find some Campagnolo holders. Kool Stop pads are available for them and easy to change since one end of the ends of the holders is open. The holders will probably be very expensive. The Kool Stop Continentals will work for you, but I think they're hideous.

Is it practical to hand-cut the appropriate bevel in a Mafac pad? Clamp the pad in a vise and cut with a razor/utility knife, or Dremel w/ cutting disk?

I'm interested because I have a bike with Universal brakes (mod 61) that will eventually get restored, so I'll have this issue too.

Mafac pads have round dots in their faces 4 dot is the road/centerpull /criterium Cantilever .. 5 dot was the longer tandem long arm cantilever

I see KS has a replica 4 dot insert made , now..

You'd have to compare the Universal holders to the MAFACs'. I don't have any Universals, but you do.

the keystone-fishtail part of the pads for Mafac 'dot' holder-shoes is Narrower than the Campag traditional holder .

But as said the Universals may be different from either . ~o)

That is absolutely not true. I used Campy pads in MAFAC holders until they started making the MAFAC replacement pads. Like I said, the MAFAC pads are just a bit longer, but the width and bevel angle is identical.

I ordered them already. I prefer the look of the metal shoe over the continental's. I was wondering if there are any other issues that I should be aware of?
