84 trek 520

My 84 trek 520 has a stripped drive side crank arm. As far as ive read i have an sr crc t-301 50/45/28. Whats my best bet here? Can i replace just the arm and keep the gears? With what crank if so ? I was also looking into running a double instead of a triple, then i was reading i might need a different bottom bracket and gears etc etc. Any help would be much appreciated

yes, you can replace the arm(s) and keep the gears. forget the double unless you want to replace a number of components.

here's some options on ebay. 110 bcd triple in Bicycle Components & Parts | eBay

If the pedal threads are stripped a Helicoil insert will repair the threads stronger than new.

You can use just about any crank with your components, from cotter pin (Ugg!) to external bearing. It makes no real difference. If you want vintage, go to Fleabay.

Sugino makes good looking triples and compacts that will look right on that bike if you decide to swap out the crank (you may need to swap out the BB as well).

Where are you located? Putting a helicoil in to fix a stripped pedal thread shouldn't be that big a deal... If the nearby shops can't do it, can they refer you to someplace that can.

the right crank arm from 84 is no longer made , anymore .

if the thread repair scheme is not chosen , a whole crankset and BB and starting over is a lower resistance route than trying to find old parts.

after all this time ..

a crank with a similar tooth count installed with the same chainline (right BB to go with it)
would let the old derailleurs continue the shoving the chain sideways , job..

cant help you from a keyboard , but the warm bodies at Bike shops where you live, may .
