Down Bar Shifters

So recently my downbar shifters on my Trek 1400 broke off (the shifters were originally attached by a metal rod that went through the frame) and they are un-repairable. I tried using epoxy to glue them back on, but there was too much force for that to work. I like my downbar shifters and I was wondering where I should look to buy either new ones or something that would let me reattach my old ones.

Thanks for any suggestions!

So I'm guessing it's the attachment that broke? That's not entirely unique.
Some thorough searching on "broken downtube shifter" may yield more specific results about what people have done about it. Otherwise there are wraparound DT shifters available. I've been able to use the band from one set to mount the old shifters but maybe I was just lucky.

Measure the diameter of the down tube, then:

I have only used frictional down tube shifters in the past but people here and on other forums often say that the new dura-ace shifters are even better than the dura-ace sti's.

This may work for you. Read the description for recommended tube diameters. NOVA LEVER BOSS KIT FOR AL FRAME :: SMALL PARTS :: BRAZON/SMALL PARTS :: Nova Cycles Supply Inc.

No such thing on a bike.

Bars are solid, not hollow. And not much stronger than a tube of the same diameter.

That would likely explain why I didn't get much in my searches. Thanks!

Now you tell me my bike has a Handletube? Lol

Jeff +1

BTW I can understand why the OP likes his down tube shifters. The make the bike look very clean, and the shift cables have almost no drag.

Actually, good point. From now on they're handletubes.

Or, never mind my proposed rationale, this is just what we happen to call this stuff, almost at random.
