Tools for DIY - Cassette, FD, BB, and Crankset work.
Good day,
It is decided, rather than taking the bike to the LBS. I want to learn on how to maintenance my own bike. It is going to cost more initially, for tools vs paying the LBS for labor, but I think it will be fun, and the extra knowledge could not hurt.
What I am attempting to D.I.Y. is the following, just want to make sure that I am ordering the correct tools for the job.
My bike: 2012 Cannondale CAAD10 BB30 w/ Sram Red
D.I.Y. # 1 - Swap out the cassette
Current – Sram Force PG 1070 12-27
New – Shimano Ultegra 11-25
Tools needed? - Chain Whip and Shimano Cassette Lock Ring tool.
D.I.Y. # 2 - Swap out the Crankset
Current – Sram Red PowerGlide BB30 170mm 53/39
New – Sram Red XGlide BB30 165mm 50/34
Tools needed? - Really not sure on what I need here, please help me out.
D.I.Y. # 3 – Take out the BB for cleaning
Tools needed? - In addition to the Crankset tools, BB30 tool remover, and Bearing Cup Press.
What type of grease should I use to repack the BB Bearings?
D.I.Y. # 4 - Swap out the Front Derailleur
Current – Sram Force FD
New – Sram Red with Yaw
Tools needed? - Allen Key.
Please correct me if I got anything wrong, pointers are always welcome.

I don't think you need a bearing press. Also get a torque wrench.

Thank you for the Link, that seems to be for GXP BB, mine is BB30, is it the same?
Looks like all I need are Allen keys and a torque wrench. I see a lot of crank removal tools on Parktool's web-site. I don't need any of them?

I hear some grinding noise coming from the BB, thinking it might be sand inside of it.
Should I get the BB30 removal tool, clean it, and then use a bearing press to reinstall the bb30 bb?
I don't have a torque wrench or a Workstand, will need to get them as well.

There are a plethora of youtube videos out there that explain everything you want to do. As a new fella, I'd suggest watching them. I probably watched videos on setting that new yaw FD about 400 times before I did it, because I didn't want to fubar it. It went pretty easily. Park tool has a bunch of good tips and videos too.
Leave your Bottom Bracket alone, as mentioned above.
As for most maintenance, test your work on the stand and then hop on the bike and go for a spin. Bring a decent set of tools with you (you don't need much, a screw driver and some allen keys for most things) so you can tweak as you go.
Make sure none of your adjustments leave you able to do something that will wreck your bike (like shifting the RD into the spokes, that sort of thing).

At that price, you basically get the tools free with the stand, or vice versa!
As for the torque wrench, look at SRAM's specs for what unit they use (Nm?, inch lbs?, ft lbs?) and get any torque wrench that reads in those units.
Working on bicycles is pretty easy, even the newest high-tech ones. You'll be really glad that you've learned some new skills, and it should increase your enjoyment of this awesome pastime.

Looks like for the Crank, I will need up to 54nm.
While other carbon parts use as little as 2-3nm (Handle bar,seat post, etc for the future), am I going to need 2 separate torque wrenchs?
They sure are pricey...

Yes, if you are going to be working with handle bar or stem you need a 1/4 inch drive torque wrench. My favorite in this size is the Park TW 1, a good dependable beam wrench. For the bottom bracket I prefer a 1/2 inch drive (Sears) beam wrench because I also use it on car wheels, manifolds, etc. A 3/8 inch drive will also work well for the BB, crank bolts, and seat post. You won't need all three sizes, but you will need the 1/4 inch drive.

Torque Wrench and tool pack looks decent from Performance bikes, the shipping sucked.
Might go cheap and just buy the specific tools I need. Chain whip and Cassette Lock ring, and just borrow the rest. Price for tools really add up with the workstand and torque wrenches...

Seems like I need a 1/4 and 1/2, the 1/2 for the crank.

That's not a bad idea. On the other hand you don't have to use a torque wrench if your arm has been calibrated by experience.

... So that may make the decision for you if cost is the major factor...
Also, my LBS has offered to let me install the parts there at his shop using his tools -- which also meant I could ask questions when I got myself in over my head...
BUT, then there is the knowledge and self satisfaction that comes from DIY...
A couple books that may help are the Zinn Art of bicycle maintenance and the Park Tool maintenance book. Both complete and good references for any work you may choose to do...
in addition, my LBS (and I think REI) both offer bicycle mechanics classes through the winter. Mine covered pretty much everything except hub and BB work... You may have some similar offerings where you live. I, being a mechanical clutz found the class very helpful and I am doing more and more of my own work -- just because...

New Question, currently, I am using a 10spd Dura Ace, not sure 7800 or 7900.
I will need some chain pins to reattach the chain after the FD & Crank installation. The chain is still in good condition, maybe 800kms ridden on it.
Just a refresh, I will be installing the below.
Would I need to shorten the chain, or need a new chain wit more links.
Now:

Sram Force 12/27 Cassette
Installing:
Sram Red 50/34 Crankset

Sram Red crank's and spider are one pcs 130bcd, won't fit on the smaller rings.
Plus, upgrading the FD to Yaw, and getting the yaw crank.

Buy the tools you can afford or borrow and leave the rest to the LBS. Sockets and torque wrenches are tools you will use on your car, so it won't be long till you have those too. You will find that as you age, tools are not the problem, but taking the time to get everything done.
