Ergon Grips
Hi,
I added ERGON GS2 grips to my 7.3 FX, which has a crowbar handlebar. I installed the grips using hairspray, however the grips are longer than the ends of the bar. They move although they are not overly loose. I am concerned that during a ride they may change position. Any thoughts on installing these properly? |
Try different grips. Andy.

Did you try scootching your shift and brake levers in some first?

That's what I had to do when I installed the Bontrager bar-end adapters on my 7.5 FX. |

I've had excellent results using hairspray for grip installation. I really saturate the inside with spray until its dripping out of the end. Position each grip on the bar, then allow 24 hours for it to dry. Locks them in place like glue, so make sure you've got 'em where you want 'em. |
...Ergons are one of the several grips that have a clamping collar on the outside end, so they should work fine, even without hairspray.
This assumes that you followed the above advice on moving your hardware inboard to the point where the clamping collar can contact the bar. |
They Now come with a paper gage, in the packaging.. you lay the gage on the bare bar an make a sharpie mark .
because they are secured by the compression bolt on the end .. you have to get the grip all the way on the handlebar until it hits the mark. the hairspray is meaningless in this case because the interior of the bar is nylon-plastic not rubber like the exterior, its the pinch bolt that holds it in place. for my Brompton I bought the ones sold as Grip Shift compatible , they are around 35mm shorter , to insure they seat firmly on the end of the bar , I used a rubber mallet to make sure the end of the bar was bottoming into the end of the grip-bar end combination . then I filled in the gap to the brake lever with Bar tape.. if you do a tidy job you can cut down some length off the inside end, and it can look OK ..(thus voiding maker's warrantees, of course) dont over tighten the bolt, you can strip the threads out of the bar end portion. they include a Nm specified torque imprint. |

He was specific, this is the product in question ERGON BIKE ERGONOMICS as it is not offered in a grip shift version
the GP series number 2 may be more suitable http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gp2.. |
I don't get this as I have several of these and they use a clamp at the outer end as has been said. It does happen that with bars that are curved it does mean replacing these with straight bars which allow room for the brake and gear levers to be pushed towards the centre.
|
for bars with more sweep angle, they have produced a different grip ERGON BIKE ERGONOMICS
it is minus a bar end .. but the shape was designed fo a sept angle exceeding 5 degrees .. A second Phorm line is less complicated moulding and a short Bar end is integrated on 1 version, not independently adjustable. |
Do not use hairspray or other solvent to install Ergon grips. Per the instructions, the handlebar should be clean and dry prior to installation. Grips come in many lengths. As others have mentioned, you will have to move your shifters and brake lever inwards in order to accept the length of the Ergon grip and barend. Also, note in the instructions and the measuring device that you have enough free handlebar space to accept the grip and barend. If you do not install over the needed free handebar space the grips will slip and you will likely break/strip the bolt on the barend when it come time to clamp with a torque wrench.
GP2 instructions are here if you need to reference: http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/file..._120703_A4.pdf Also note, it was brought to our attention a few years ago that some of the newer Trek FX bikes come with Trek's own handlebar and grip combo. Only Trek brand (Bontrager) grips will work on this handlebar. Double check that you don't have one of these bar/grip combos. Jeff K Ergon Bike USA |
Thanks for the input. I called Performance (where I purchased from) and the tech support rep mentioned hairspray. I also stopped at a local Dicks Sporting Goods the bike tech mentioned hairspray. So I used a little! However, a couple of hours later I did move the hardware over and repositioned the grips. They seem much better! I am going to go out for a ride in a bit so I guess I will find out.
Does the clamp do anything besides adjust the finger bar? i.e., does it affect the grip on the handlebar? I did not see anything to measure in the packaging. Perhaps I missed something...I will check that out again. |
Tell ya what. If glue is needed (nasty hairspray is some of the best), then use it. Safety wire too.
Anyone here shove around a twostroke?!? |
The truly desperate go for spraypaint if aquanet extrahold doesn't get it.

I have these same grips on my hard-tail MTB. A lot of 'enthusiasm' was needed to get the clamp portion onto the end of the handlebar, and they were flexy until that happened. So +1 to fietsbob comments. Yes the clamp holds the paddle shaped palm rest in place as well as the position of the finger bar, they are rock-solid if the clamp is in the right place on the end of the bar. A good upgrade but lots of swearing.

I have some on my 7.1FX and I had to use a rubber mallet to tap the clamp over the end of the bar, after that they tightened right up.

Thank you. The grips are secure. I repositioned them and had an amazing ride today. That is the ticket!
PS - It is so good to hear from a manufacturer directly. I would be happy to beta test new products! 8-) |
