Rim Size Relation to Tire Size
How much leeway is there between the actual rim size and the tire size that will fit it? And are all rims marked? I'm specifically thinking of a 700 x 32 tire. Thank you.

Dimensions in diameter are fixed, no leeway there.
Recommendations of rim width vs tire width found here: Tire Sizing Systems
Chart is conservative, going wider is rarely a problem.
No, not all rims are marked.

I'm beginning to think that chart is getting to be so conservative that it's become almost meaningless?

Going to 32 from what. Look for the label on the rim and it will say 599-0018, or something similar. 599 is the diameter, 18 is the inside width in mm. Realistically, you can go from anything the same size, to almost 3 times wider...... Keeping it 1.5 times to 2.5 times wider is smarter.
