Front Derailler Adjustment
Hi I'm tuning up my 12speed Fuji Royale for a Fl. tour with Dwagenheim and others and I got the front derailler adjusted so it shifts great in the air but once I try riding it won't shift to the upper chainring.I adjusted the derailler independent from the cable then tightened the cable.Anyone know what the problem might be? Front derailure movement is only half the battle.
You have to have it positioned correctly.
Line the derailure cage so it is just over the biggest chainring - not touching, but close to the big chainring.
Make sure that the derailure cage is absolutely parallel with the chainring.
That should do 'er.

Mike and Others I made both those adjustment but since the derailer is somewhat bent it might not be perfect.Thinking about it more the only difference must have been I was spinning the wheels faster when in the air.So I guess I should make adjustments spinning the wheel slower.Does it make sense that this should be happening.Alternatively maybe I was going too slow when testing it and if I go at a speed I would normally make thatshift it will work .While I was not going real fast I do think I was going at a speed it should have shifted. Bend it back to "straight", it's pretty easy to do. Bending the inside plate so the bottom is a tiny bit closer to the large chainring dhtan the top may help too, also bending the front tip of the inner plate toward the big chainring can help too. The outer plate should "just clear" the outer chainring and be parallel to it.

pat Thanks for that information that is the type of fine tuning that derailler could use.I finally did get the adjustments set and actually did try to bend the derailler some with pliers but was concerned I might break something. As much time as it took me I don't want to mess with anything now however when I get back I will follow that advice as I know the inner plate in particular is still bent .By the way I can't sleep the night before I start the tour.At least I am beginning to regain my lost appetite so I may make it.Thanks again.
