Where are you at? Winter weather can be quite different in different places. And what kind of trails: asphalt, stone, dirt?

OK, it'll be a while. Plenty of time for you to assess or improve your skills, and for tire models to change. Whatever answer you get now may not be right in 6 months.

Enjoy the summer, and wait to worry about winter.

There are now a lot of 29'er MTB tires (same as 700c) available and these should have plenty of tread to suit your purpose. Just be sure that your frame and fork will clear what ever you pick.

Read the second part.

Who knows what new an possibly better tires may be available in 6 months. Also, if bike tires are at all like automotive tires, the selection of winter tires will be at it's lowest now. No reason not to explore options now, but hold off buying until you see all the options, including new stuff.

See my thinking was NOW is the time to buy them as noone else is looking and the prices are at their lowest

pricing of seasonal goods is kind of a funny thing. I don't know how the bike folks are, but I suspect that had you struck earlier you might have gotten a good deal on a left over. But if bike people think like auto people (for example) you might have missed the timing.

Anti-freeze and snow tires are priced most aggressively coming into the season as players slug it out for a slice of the peak market. Off season, they charge full price because there's not enough market to fight over, and they figure anybody shopping now is serious and will pay.

So, if you find a deal, jump, but if it isn't right wait, and shop hard when sellers have maximum stock to unload.

I highly doubt that bike tires are going to change that much in the coming year...the styles out there now in the hybrid style are pretty much the same as they have been for years
