freewheel 700c

Can i remove a freewheel from a 700c wheel and put it on a 27 wheel without a problem? Im going to sell sell an extra bike i have, and would love to keep the 700c wheels and throw on some 27 clunkers. Should i have any problems with this?

The freewheel won't be the problem but the brakes might. If the pads won't adjust 4 mm higher, they won't align on the 27" wheels

^^^

my experience too.

a better quesion might be:what problems will i encounter when swapping 27" wheels onto a bike designed for 700c?

there could be many, but i have an 85 trek that was designed for 700c that works with 27's on it. the front tire rubs on the underside of the fork if i put anything larger than a 25mm tire on it though. and i have a new aluminum frame designed for 700c wheels and it works fine with 27's on it too. don't know about the max tire size i can use on it though.

brakes on both are 80's vintage dura-ace and shimano 600. medium to long reach. i only have the front brake so you are on your own as regards the rear.

Both 27 and 700c wheels came in at least two main widths, 120 and 126mm. The wheel can become misaligned with strong pedaling if the new wheels are the wrong width and it is bad for the axle cones. If the 27" wheel is a 120mm, the end of a freewheel for a 126mm hub can stick out further than the end of the hub. Most 120mm wheels were five speed and most 126mm wheels were six speed.

There are also some older wheels out there with freehubs.

There is also the chance that one wheel is French or Italian. Those had different freewheel threads.

Some people are not aware of the difference between a freewheel and a cassette. They are not compatible, so confirm you have 2 wheels that are both for freewheels.
