Fork Idea??

Currently riding Long Haul Trucker with V Brakes. Because I have Trekking Bars I would like to have additional brake levers. What about having both V Brake and Disc on the fork?

Wilfred Laurier 07-23-14 10:16 PM

i see no reason not to do that
i also see no reason not to not do that

as long as both are set up as proper reliable brakes
it should work fine
so give it a try

Can't see your setup, but I'd be inclined to reconfigure the lever setup and stay with the one brake type (V-brake). Inline levers, cross levers, or interrupter levers (all the same thing) can be used for dual positions. It may involve some different cable routing. Two different braking systems through different levers? Not for me.

I'm almost positive somebody makes a cable splitter that lets you pull one brake with two levers.

I see tandem mtn bikes do the dual brake thing because they are HEAVY but kind of seems overkill in your situation.

Redundant Brakes on a Mountain tandem

The Problem Solver looks like the ticket! The reason is I want to be able to spread my hands out on descents and be able to reach the lever.

I think Triathlon folks are the niche market for those so may be short pull capacity . as they run road bikes
and those short reach short pull calipers.
2 levers > one brake .... brifters + on aero bar ends, reverse levers..

I run trekking bars , for steep descents , I'm on the back of the bars where the brake levers are..

and push my backside off the back of the saddle to lower my C-of-G.. to prevent endos.

BTW there are brake levers which pull 2 cables simultaneously too ..

& Magura's Hydro rim brakes can daisy chain 2 levers on the master end,
just like they use 2 calipers on the slave end, 1 mounted on each V brake post.

Closed system, just mineral oil after all the air is bled out.

Would your cable run accommodate crosstop levers?

The late, great Sheldon Brown did that years and years ago: The Surly Karate Monkey Rohloff 14 speed from Harris Cyclery

One lever, two brakes.

you could probably fit a few more mechanisms
and cable stops in there
but dont worry
the brakes still wouldnt work any better

I read a message from someone saying he tried it and flew over the handlebars going down a hill and bent the spokes in his wheels. lol

I once installed a rear caliper brake with a front V-brake compatible brake lever and went over the bars as well.

Kool-Stop dual compound brake pads may be what you're looking for (salmon/black).

The combination of the Direct Curve brake and disc might be overkill on a single bike but on a loaded tandem it works exceptionally well as it distributes the braking load and prevents over-heating... note that the IRD disc has no plastic parts as you can melt lesser brakes on a tandem.

We tested the hell out of this and this has already been equipped on several recent tandem builds and a triplet and the rear setup also utilizes dual brakes... it makes for some incredibly good stopping power with the brakes sequenced properly.
