chain/cassette aggravation question
I just purchased a sram pg950 11x28 cassette and a kmc x8.pp 18speed compatible 3/32x1/2 , chain.
I installed both and the chain is sticking between the high gear cogs in smallest three cogs where it comes off the top of the cogs The chain kmc does same thing on original 11x25 cassette which originally called for same spec 11/32x1/2 chain, Unfortunately the orig chain is to short for 11x28 sram cassette. Would a little sticking between high gear cogs eventually wear to non sticking and or is that little sticking normal in a new chain? It shifts, but drags due to chain grab between cogs. For the day after tomorrow long hilly ride I'm back to original chain and cassette but I'd like to keep and use the kmc and sram if feasible. Any input appreciated. |
could be 8-speed chain and 9-speed cassette incompatibility. i think i remember something about different cog spacing on 8 vs 9. maybe not. you might try wiki.

Looks like I shoulda ordered 1/2 x 11/128" kmc x9.99 instead of going by original bike specs chain size especially since I knew specs for bike on bike pedia were not a hundred percent correct for bike.
I know I read it was 7,8,9 compatible (18/21/24) on packaging, friggin aggravating, was depending on 18 tooth cassette for 100k on Saturday. Amazon says that chain (x9.99) is ordered with that cassette, shoulda trusted their marketing instead. |
i feel for ya, if that makes any difference. :) bike parts are real mess of incompatibilities...

The metric 3 times tables we learned in the colonies would indicate that 18/21/24 relates to 6/7/8 and not 7/8/9 but the imperial times tables may be different.
