CAAD8 Sora upgrade to bb30?

Hello - I have a CAAD8 Sora with a FSA VERO, 50/39/30 crank with FSA Cartridge (68mm, threaded - I believe) bottom bracket.

I have a SRAM Force bb30 crankset and bb that I'd like to use on the CAAD. Some of the CAAD8's use bb30. However, at the Sora level it's the cartridge. Same frame, I believe, but I don't know if it's been altered and won't accept a bb30. Anyone out there know? I've searched but couldn't find a clear answer.

I have the 2013 version of this bike. Looks like it's the same - CAAD8 7 Sora - CAAD8 - Elite Race - ROAD - BIKES - 2014

Thanks for any help!

Paul

If it's a threaded BB then a BB30 crank will not work - unless it has an adapter to convert it to threaded. I think you are going to have to pull the crank and have a look.

Thanks for the reply Slash. Bottom brackets are about as complex as genetics it seems.

BB30 bottom bracket bearings have an ID of 30mm and an OD of 41mm. shimano threaded BB's, IIRC, use bearings with an ID of 24mm and OD of about 37mm?. bearings are only made in a limited variety of sizes and combinations of ID and OD. there is no cartridge bearing made with a suitable OD that fits a threaded BB shell (37mm?) with an ID greater than 24mm. apparently, there is not enough room for an inside race, ball bearings and an outside race.

and if it hasn't been mentioned, Shimano one-piece cranks, i think, have 24mm spindles.

Not really, the frame determines the BB type, which then determines the type of crank used. simples...

The CAAD8 is BB30.

The FSA Vero crank has a square-taper spindle that uses a threaded cartridge BB.

To fit the square taper crank/BB onto a BB30 shell, a threaded sleeve that is pressed into the shell is used.

It is possible to tap out the sleeve using a mallet and a PVC pipe.

The OP needs to buy a BB30 bearing set - bearings, bearing shields, wave washers, spacers, and c-clips (circlips), install everything correctly, so that he could use the SRAM Force BB30 crank.
