Rumbling feeling through crank arms?

Hi everyone,
I am a novice mechanic and own a 2010 Surly Long Haul Trucker. It has a 56 cm frame and 700 c wheels. I recently installed a new set of Truvativ MTB Isoflow chainrings (22T, 32T, and 42T), Shimano CN-7701 Dura Ace/XTR 9 Speed Chain, and Shimano HG-61 11-34t 9 Speed Cassette. The good news is the shifting seems ok and the ride seems generally smooth. The bad news is that I can feel a rumbling/ grinding sensation through the crank arms. The sensation is minimal when I ride in a cog with a lot of teeth and gets more intense/ stronger and as I progress into the smaller cogs. It is most intense when I ride with the smallest cog? What do I need to adjust to remedy this? Thanks!

That's not likely an adjustment issue, but we need to know what the rear derailleur and shifters are and if you have tried adjusting the cable tension. Also, what is your typical cadence (crank rpms) when this occurs and on which chainrings does it occur? Finally, I am assuming you did not have the problem previously, correct?.

Does your new cassette have a larger big cog than the old one? If so, did you properly adjust the rear derailleur "B" screw? Chain the right length, too long maybe?

Derailleur hanger and cage alignment checked?

Is the chain threaded through the derailleur correctly? We've all made that mistake.

Assuming it worked OK before, with almost all new parts it is probably something simple and obvious that is being overlooked. Or one of the old parts may have an issue. Derailleur pulleys, maybe?

You could be feeling the chordal action on the smaller sprockets.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. I did not see any obvious problems per the above recommendations. I asked my LBS to safety check the drive train. They identified a loose cassette as the issue. Essentially I had such a bear of a time removing the cassette that I did not sufficiently tighten the lock ring due to my fear of never being able to remove it in the future. I will fix this in the morning. Hopefully that solves the issue....
