Using an 11 speed crankset with a 10 speed system

In the past I have run a shimano 10 speed double crankset with a shimano 9 speed system (9-speed shifters, derailleurs, cassette and chain) with no problems at all.
I currently have a shimano 6700 10 speed system, and I would like to install Shimano's new ultegra 6800 11 speed double crankset to take advantage of the wider range of chainring sizes. It seems logical that this set up should also work without problems. I would love to use the new 52-36 combination on the new crankset with my older 10 speed system. Anybody out there have experience with using an 11-speed crankset with a 10 speed system or have an opinion on this? Thanks!

No personal experience but, based on past experience, I would bet quite a lot that an 11-speed cranks will work fine with a 10-speed chain.

^^ I would think so too. They are so close in spec.

I mix and match 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed stuff from different manufacturers with some limitations. Quelle Horror! Zinn's pieecs and reader's comments in VeloNews are worth reading for definitive answers.....but

Why wouldn't an 11 speed crank work with a 10 speed chain? Aren't the chains essentially the same. The chainring spacing is a bit wider on the 11 speed to accommdate the chain angles. It will work despite what you are told.....buy all new stuff. I would even bet 10 speed SRAM shifters and derailleurs will shift a Shimano 10 speed chain onto an 11 speed shimano crank. What do you really haev to lose by trying

I tend to agree. The 11 speed chain is a fraction of a mm narrower but this is the external width. The internal width is the same. For what it's worth, I've used an 11 speed chain on a 10 speed crankset and cogs with no problems.

I am running 6700 10 speed rear derailleur and chain with a 5800 11 speed crank. No issues for a couple hundred hard miles, but now I am hearing a very annoying squeak. I first thought it was the chain in need of a good cleaning and lubricant, but after a thorough cleaning last night, this morning the squeaking continues.

I cannot tell where the squeak is coming from, but I am determined to find out. Has any one a guess? Might there be another source of the squeak such as the bottom bracket..etc. and not the drivetrain? I have had a few very gritty metro-area rides where my bike got just caked with salt and grime.

Could be anywhere from your sit bones to your socks :-)....IE seat to pedals :-).

lol, its definitely coming from the drive train, likely the bottom bracket or jockey wheels.

I just put a 6800 11 52/36 on one of my bikes. The rest of it is 7900 10spd. I had to tweak the FD a bit, but shifting is very nice and riding is silent. I went from the 53/39 to make it more of a climbing bike. No noticeable difference on the flats, and when it tilts up there does seem to be another gear.
