Wheel & Tire Question

I hope this post is not too stupid but here it goes.

I got a flat on the rear wheel of my bike. The tire is marked 700x250, which I think is Chinese for 700x25c.

So I went to the store and bought a 700c x 25/32c tube with a presta valve. Seemed to fit fine, except I didn't correct the issue which caused the original flat...and blew out that tube.

Unfortunately the store didn't have any other 700c tubes so I bought a 27" Standard (1⅛ - 1¼) tube which pretty much fit but not as great. It seems like it'll work just fine though.

So if the 27" standard tube is adequate, then we get to my question:

I bought a 27" x 1¼ road tire that says it'll replace 1¼ to 1⅜ tire. Will this fit on my wheel? Or should I return it and look for a 700c tire?

I think it has HJC alloy black 700CX14GX32H rims.

Tubes are forgiving, tire diameters aren't.
700C tires have a bead seat diameter of 622 mm. 27" tires usually are 630 mm BSD. Not interchangeable.

No. A 27" rim is bigger than a 700c rim. The tire has to fit pretty exactly on the rim and the bead of the 27" tire will not seat properly on the inside hook of the 700c rim. (I am assuming you have clinchers.)

Inner tubes are a different story because they expand so much when you inflate them so there's a bit of give and take.

See this article for more than you'd ever want to know about tire sizing. Tire Sizing Systems

Awesome, thanks for the quick replies. I'll return the 27" tire and a 700c.

One other stupid question.

Is it okay to use talcum powder inside the tire?

It's a good idea to use talcum powder inside the tire, it keeps the tub from sticking to the tire and helps reduce pinch flats.

Falcon,

I have always used plain old Johnson Baby powder. Cheap, works great, and never a problem.

I used talc for decades after reading that I should. (Bicycling mag?)
Then a few years ago I read on the internet (maybe BF) that it served no real purpose, so I stopped using it.
No resultant tire problems since becoming talc-free.
