I read, like, the first six posts in this thread wondering "what's the big deal about cleaning the downtube? And why would i need to take the chain off?" Ha.

Everybody does it differently... find what works for you, balancing your personal priorities of thoroughness/efficacy/laziness as you see fit. Ask ten cyclists what they do, and you'll likely get ten variations--- most of which will be similar, with at least one oddball with truly bizarre techniques.
