26" wheel build question
I've built a few 700c wheelsets with a 4x pattern and have relaced a 26" wheelset in 3x and have never seen a 4x 26" wheel. My question is, can you go 4x with a 26" wheel or are you limited to 3x or less due to the diameter?

The limitation isn't related as much to the wheel diameter, as to the hub diameter. Regardless of the wheel size, the rim wants the spokes to go to the center. "bending" them forward or back to go to either side of the hub flange moves them off radial. The relative size of the hub flange to the rim diameter sets a practical limit. The issue is most pronounced on the large diameter electric motor hubs and the like.
Also note that 4x is limited to wheels with 36 or more spokes. On a 36h 4x wheel the spokes meet the hub on a full tangent. If you 4x a 32h build the spokes would pass across the flange to meet a hole more than halfway around. In other words the spokes would leave the flange going back toward the center before going toward the rim.

I should have mentioned that all wheels in question are 36H. What I'm looking at is 36H Rhyno Lite XL rims on Deore 590 hubs for my old school rigid MTB. I'm thinking 3x but I wanted to know if 4x is an option.

The ability of the nipple to align with the spoke is how you decide how many crosses to build with.
