Chain Directionality

Replaced a dead freewheel. Pulled the chain and dropped it in the solvent tank. I did not pay attention to direction/side. I have some crunchiness expected from new rear cogs, but more chainline noise as I get off line.

New chain or oil this one and wait?

If its Shimano, they are directional and the logos should be on the outside of the chain.

Also, check for any stiff links, especially the link you used to re-attach the chain. You need to re-lube the chain.

"Replaced a dead freewheel." My policy is to start a fresh chain with new freewheel cogs.

+1 this. Replace chain regardless.

Will do!

New chain, 100% quiet and smooth shifting. Thanks all for the advice!

Only a few Shimano chains are (were?) directional. They were the 10-speed 5700, 6700 and 7900 and Shimano seems to have abandoned this idea in current models. I seriously doubt the OP's freewheel bike came with a new 10-speed chain and even less likely it's directional.
