Shimano St-5700 in bits!!
Hello all,
New to the forum but looking forward to giving some input if i can. First off, I recently purchased a brand new shimano st-5700 rh brifter from a well known auction listed as "for parts not working". Me being me I thought I would take a chance on purchasing and repairing, the gear mech was completely disassembled from its cage, 4 hours later I am no closer to putting it back together. I have been on the shimano website and the images are not detailed enough to perform the rebuild. My question is, Has anyone ever put one of these back together if so do you have a photo description of what you did, if not I was hoping that someone who owns one of thes would be able to take a photo of the actual gear mechanism for me to give me a starting point as to what goes where. I welcome any advice or critisism. |
As you might be guessing by now Shimano never intended their STI units to be serviceable. They offer no service documents or replacement parts (other then non shift pod bits). Over the years I have read of a few who did take apart and reassembled their units. But the number who wanted to but couldn't or decided to not try is VASTLY greater then those who did. This is why about the only servicing ever mentioned is the degunking and relubing of older units. Even when Shimano actually had some internal failure issues (way back when) they would just warranty the entire pod/lever with a new one. Good luck. Andy.

You are unlikely to be able to reassemble it correctly and there are probably pieces missing or damaged. Save the hood, the faceplate and little screw that hold it on and maybe the access panel and screw. Someone may want those someday.

thanks for the replies, Oh well I may as well experiment with it, who knows I might get it working. Would love to get a picture of the mech though as reference.

http://si.shimano.com/php/download.p...0A-002-ENG.PDF And I know whilst looking around about my 6800 brifters that there was a "service" portion of the manual (which probably wouldn't help you much) but I thought it kind of funny they actually considered "servicing" brifters. I know I wouldn't DARE start pulling one of these puppies apart cuz I'd surely lose parts. Like taking apart a complex carburetor! :crash: |

Thanks for the replies and Links, Will study them and see if they compare to the bits that I have, Principle has to be the same i'd have thought.
