Ultegra cage on Dura-ace Rear derailleur?

I assume these should fit but I figure i'd ask. I might have the opportunity to get a DA RD cheap that looks like the hanger broke and the cage got nailed into the wheel. seller says it needs the lower cage so i figure i could swap it with the ultegra cage i have now. They are both 9 speed (though i stretch it to 10 perfectly fine)

compatible?

shimano parts are generally not serviceable
so the price you are paying for a damaged derailleur
even a dura ace
is $0.00
or less

also
if the derailleur absorbed such force that the cage got damaged
it is pretty likely that there was some damage to the rest of it

I have doubts about that. People ride crashed RD's all the time. as far as serviceable.. There are plenty of parts on a RD that are bolt on replaceable.. including the cages, pulleys, cable binder bolt, etc.

The rest of the dura ace RD looks in better shape than my current ultegra, possibly less miles. Is there no shifting upgrade with Dura ace?

Well i stand corrected. the inner cage doesn't come off. What i thought was a bolt seems to be a rivet into the main body. Maybe SRAM is bolt on where people swap the carbon cages for alloy for better durability or replacement.

i guess i will pass, doesn't seem worth the effort if i can't use the pieces i already have.

Shimano shows the cage to be a separate on the Exploded View of the RD-7800.

Unfortunately, I've never been there to know what's entailed in removal.

It may have a bolt on the 7800 but it doesn't look removable on the 6800 so swapping parts doesn't look possible.

from the CL ad... not too much to go on. the ring down near the pulley that is off he said is a washer that goes against one of the pulleys.. that doesn't exist on my Ultegra version either.

"What i thought was a bolt seems to be a rivet into the main body."

Make sure that it is not a 2mm hex drive screw; Shimano uses them often and they look a lot like a rivet. You might need a magnifier to tell.

i have never seen the front part of the cage removed
at least not in any way that it could be reattached

as for upgrading

no not really

when new
ultegra works as well as dura ace
as does 105 and tiagra

sora and claris and 2200
and lower
perhaps dont work quite as well when new
but not to the point that it would actually affect your ride

the main difference
besides an insignificant difference in weight
is how easy they will be to keep in adjustment after a year
or three
or five
ie
how quickly the parts wear out
but
imho
the difference between ultegra and dura ace
is so small i doubt i could notice it without a digital weigh scale

and
to paraphrase a cyclist friend
rear derailleurs generally die from misadventure
rather than wear

ya, i told him i'd pass. if it was a simple swap then i'd give it a shot since mine is scuffed from a previous life on my friends bike and probably has less miles but i'll leave it alone
