9 speed 6500 cassette and Ksyrium SSC ( M10 hub, I believe) query

Hello all,

I have a query as the longer I read on the subject, the deeper into the black hole I go. Recently picked up a near mint 02-03 Cannondale Caad5 for the group and wheelset. It came equipped with full 6500 Ultegra and Ksyrium SSC (early 2000) and after the transfer onto my frame, I noticed that the cassette was dancing the Macarena while going through the gears on the repair stand. Take the wheel off and consequently the cassette to find a spacer that is slightly less than 2 mm and between the hub and the 6500 9 speed cassette.

Have taken things further by taking apart the hub. Bushing was fine, there is no wobble and once torqued, the cassette does not wiggle.

Some say that another spacer is needed and some say the opposite. I go the my LBS with my wallet wide open as I can no longer wait to go all Ricky Bobby on my rejuvenated rig and the gent behind the counter was not only of no help, but goes on to further muddy the water.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

It's very simple, and once you grasp the principle, you'll never have to ask about using spacers to match cassettes and freehub bodies.

The front of the cassette has to overhang the end of the freehub by 1-2mm so the lockring can tighten against the cassette without bottomng against the freehub. Otherwise, the lockring will bottom out ant the cassette will still be loose. It's analogous to the necessary stack height for threadless headset spacers, which allow the top cap to press the spacers down without bottoming on the fork.

The overhang options are limited because, while you need overhang, you can't have too much or else the 1st sprocket may not engage the splines adequately, or may be too far out and the chain may rub the dropout in high.

So spacer, yes or no, or how much simply depends on what's needed to bring the cassette out past the outside face of the freehub.

Count the cogs to make sure there are 9. The spacing between the cogs should all be the same. The first position cog (the smallest) must have a built-in spacer on the back. Most Mavic hubs require a 2 mm spacer behind the cassette because the hug is designed to accept a Mavic cassette which has an overall greater width than a Shimano cassette.
It is important to have all of the cogs fit tightly on the freehub. Loose cogs can damage the freehub splines, especially if they are aluminum.
Other than the Mavic spacer mentioned I'm not aware of any other spacers needed for a 9-speed cassette.
