question about brake pads...

currently running avid shorty ultimate on my cx with narrow stance. also riding with carbon fiber wheelset with brake pads that came with the wheelset.

i dont' ride the brakes but pulse braking is fine up till i'm coming down a 15 degree slope and the shorty doesn't seem to wanna stop.

thinking about switching to a v-brake setup to work with my SRAM Red shifter. read on other forum from old post that Tektro makes some V brakes for BMX that can be used on bikes with road shifter/ brakes.

so here's my two part questions:

1) are there any pads that would work with CF rim without toasting them or damaging the brake track?
2) which tektro V brake can i get that will work with my SRAM RED shifter?

thank you...

Plenty, Swissstop Yellow King & Black Prince, many other brands as well, including Koolstop and most rim manufactures make them for their own rims.

Would forget the BMX brake idea, and get some brakes designed to to the job from the start, TRP CX8.4 are what you want to look at TRP you will need to swapout the stock pads for carbon ones.

Disc brake pads? [the physics is Friction, so probably none will stop ,grabbing the rim directly, with out taking off a little bit of rim and pad over time..]

Given: dirt is abrasive .. I'd only be on the CF wheels on Race Day .. then take them Off .

My experience with shorty linier pull brakes and road levers is that you get only slightly more leverage then cantis but far more mush/lever pull, to the point of having to keep the rims real true and run the pads with minimal clearance off the rims. While I have not ridden a bike "in anger" with that set up I have ridden MANY after servicing and have always commented on how poorly the mini V and road lever combo felt. And the vast majority on these bikes have had AL rims, not Carbon rimes which further mess up the braking performance.

None of my bikes use any type of linier brake. Tandem, tour, CX and ATB. But I don't race, I know how to set up a canti really well, I maintain my stuff well and tend to look pretty far ahead while riding. But then I also run my roller blades w/out brakes too... Andy.

the reason why i asked is because i'm currently running shorty ultimate on my cx in narrow stance and can't stop very well at all when coming down a 15-18% grade. i'm running with carbon rim and black prince pads, which is the same setup as the one on my addict. so i know brake + cf rim stopping is good, expecially on my addict running red calipers.

but on this canti.. it's a whole different story. i've ordered the TRP CX8.4 in hopes that it will have better stopping power than these canti. don't know why every raves about the shorty ultimate, when i can't get it to stop when i want them to.

here's some photo of my setup. took it to the LBS and they all said it looks fine.

I'm stumped.

I like to use Problem Solvers Wide Cable Carriers Problem Solvers and run my straddle wire quite low to the wheel. Works for me.

On low and medium profile cantis, mechanical leverage will be improved by lowering the straddle cable.
