26" tire question

I have some new wheels I will be building up in a few months. The rims are 26" Velocity Atlas, the width is 25.4mm. I will be using Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 2" tires while touring. BUT what is the narrowest tire I can use?

Those tire width guides are very conservative. I had a Trek MTB that came with 26x 2.25" (559x57 mm) tires and I successfully used slick 26x1.25" tires (559x32) on it for road riding.

Honestly, anything a few "c's" above the internal width of the rim is a pretty safe bet. 28c and up will work just fine.

My rule of the thumb is have the tire width wider than the external rim width by "some" amount.

i agree
but would like to rephrase it
in the parlance of a mathematics professor

My rule of the thumb is have the tire width wider than the external rim width by "some non-zero" amount.

For thes a 28mm touring tire is likely the norrowest I would go for touring purposes on these rims.

The tires that are going on those wheels (26 x 2" Marathon Supreme) are absolutely awesome. They are light (for the size and toughness) and spin up to speed quickly.

Whats so great about narrow?

I like the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes 26"x2". Just thought maybe a narrower and less expensive tire when I am not touring.
