Non-bike tech question (mods, please wait 24 hours before moving

Hi-

This has nothing to do with bikes, but some of the folks here are the ones I trust.

I'm running 8.1 on a laptop with touch screen. I'm looking to draw on screen. I know I can buy a drawing pad, and that you can draw on tablets running 8.1, so is there an app that will allow me to draw on my laptop's screen.

To the mods, a delay before moving would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would imagine that just using MS Paint and a quality stylus would be sufficient for most drawings.

Thank you, I didn't know I had it in there. I'll give that a shot before spending dough for another toy.

Mods, feel free to move or close now.

Are you looking for something to draw with or a program to use? not sure which you are asking for.

I use WACOM styli at work and at home. The Bamboo line is a lower-cost line and is good for home use; I use an Intuos for heavy-duty CAD work, at my job. Trying to draw with a mouse seems outright primitive when compared to a good stylus.

either or both, but the program was key. It turns out I have MS paint, which works with the touch screen which is fine for now. I'll buy a stylus so I don't have to finger paint. I suspect that some of the dedicated drawing pads and programs may be better for my purposes, but I'm OK for the moment.

BTW- So far I have a love/hate relationship with 8.1. Some of the features, like touch screen are nice, but finding thinks like the control panel seem much more difficult. It's an interesting change from windows 7, but like bikes you can't stop "progress" even if it's sometimes backwards.

I agree and gave up trying years ago. I was/am ready to buy a real drawing pad, but was curious because my laptop has a touchscreen. It turns out that I CAN draw on the screen with a stylus or finger, which is much easier, so it's now a question of resolution and program capabilities.

Easier than you might think.

Hit the window key to bring it to the start screen and then start typing to search. Window key + C + O + N+ T + Enter and you're at the control panel.

Microsoft OneNote has a pretty good stylus interface.

IMO, there is a huge variety in quality of styluses (stylii?). I had a terrible one for a while, but eventually found one with a much smaller and better tip.

Or:

Windows Key + C (or curser to upper right of screen)
Click on Settings
Click on Control Panel

Or pin Control Panel and other programs you use regularly to your Win 7-style desktop Task Bar or create a shortcut on the desktop.

And then configure things so you start up in the desktop instead of the metro interface. Right click in an empty part of the taskbar. Choose Properties->navigation and configure as suits you. And there you go. New and improved Windows 7.

Re styli, I think it may have something to do with the monitor. The MS Surface Pro 1 & 2, for example, use a non-powered stylus. The Surface Pro 3 stylus needs a battery and is apparently an improvement for some reason. Unless you're using it professionally I don't know why anything (i.e. a Wacom tablet) other that a multitouch monitor would be needed. Even at that, there's something to be said for drawing right on the screen instead of on a blank tablet. On my Surface Pro 1 it works very well with very good pressure sensitivity.

Enjoy!
