SRAM Ratios

I have a SRAM 9 speed 11-32. I wish to change this cassette to something with more narrow ratios, near the lowest third of the cassette there is a an annoying jump, shifting back and forth. I'm having a difficult time finding published specs on what I have and if there is anything other model that would give me something like 11-12-13-14-15-16- then I don't care about the rest.

There are plenty out there if you're willing to give up enough at the low end. But if you need the 32t or even 28t you won't find anything because they have to transition to the bigger steps at some time. Most cassettes are designed around the ides of keeping the percent change as close to constant as possible.

One option which might solve your problem is to use smaller chainrings, especially if you don't use the 11 or 12t sprockets much. Smaller rings move you toward the smaller end of the cassette where the steps are closer.

Do you really need an 11T smallest cog? If not, there are 12x25 and 12x27 9-speed cassettes that do indeed, "close up" the cog spacing. The really hard cog to get in anything but very narrow range 9-speeds is the 16T.

Flat lander, never even shift to the smaller chain ring. Wind, road conditions, fatigue, slight grades. I do use the 11 and 12. Using Amazon I have found a 9 speed model that fits my needs.
PG 970 11-21
I now have a compatibility question! Current cassette is an unknown model number SRAM 9 speed 11-32. Should the the PG 970 be a direct replacement re hub and chain?

Yes, it's a drop-in replacement. You could shorten the chain if you want to, but there's no requirement that you do. After replacing the cassette take a look at the B-screw adjustment. Odds are you can bring the RD up closer which will improve shift response.

BTW- if your chain has a decent amount of mileage, consider replacing it when you switch cassettes. Worn chains rapidly wear sprockets to match their wear condition.

Thanks! New bike this summer, only 500 miles or so. Still dialing things in. Will shortening the chain help shifting?

Definitely no if you have a Sram derailleur. Possibly, but not much if you have a Shimano or Campagnolo derailleur. But adjusting the RD to ride closer via the B-screw will help, so that's where to start.
