Bike direction tube moves back and forth

Hi,

The headset moves (not a lot) on the bike (Jamis Ventura 2008). I have another bike and it doesn't do that (Opus Andante 2008). I looked on the web and it was suggested to hold the break and tighten the headset but that didn't work. I wonder if there is anything to do for that (is it normal?) I bought this bike used two days ago and is in a relatively good condition.

Cheers!

Please Google "bike parts diagram" and use those terms, not one from a translation program. It appear you should not yet be working on your own bike, as you have already damaged parts.

Please Google "bike parts diagram" and use those terms, not one from a translation program. "direction tube" and "beak" are not bicycle terms. It appears you should not yet be working on your own bike, as you have already damaged parts. From reading your other posts the minor problems you have might have cost less for a shop to repair than you will pay for replacement parts.

beak is a typo, I meant break.

The correct term for tube direction is headset I believe after looking an English diagram! Sorry!

It's BRAKE. OK, so now that you have the term just Google adjust threadless headset. Again, parktool.com and sheldonbrown.com are best. Taking bearings apart is called overhaul, fixing minor problems without taking apart is called adjust, and putting on a new part is called replace. Put those together with the correct part name and you will find lots of guidance through Google.

How to service a headset and replace headset bearings - BikeRadar
Looks easy to replace!
Now I need to find the proper bearings... Where to look for?

Why not try adjusting it correctly before replacing things?

No, just NOT paying attention. I said to look up ADJUST headset, and pointed you to two specific sites. That page is nowhere on the results and in my opinion the instructions are not very good - too sketchy. You only overhaul if proper adjustment is insufficient. As for "easy" if you can't figure out where to get bearings it's not going to be too easy.

Mooder- If you are from another country that isnt English speaking, add it to your profile. We forgive a lot of spelling/misuse of words from those who are trying a new language.

As suggested, adjust your bearings first before replacing parts.

Good luck!

Thanks for your answers. I did forgot to unscrew the stem... I managed to scrap one of the screw and I can't tighten the system enough to prevent it to move (I can't apply enough pressure on the stem). I went to LBS asking for a screw replacement but the two places I visited only carry the whole thing that is going for 30$!

This is the screw I am talking about:

The whole ''system'':

Crap...

Any chance I can find a replacement?
This new used bike is going to cost me a lot...

I need some precision, what do you mean by standard parts name for stuff graphic & low hanging stickie?

I think it is entirely possible that your stack height exceeds the amount of exposed steer tube.

It's not the bike that's costing a lot but rather your lack of attention and being careful. The odds are if you "work on" anything else you will cause more damage. A shop would have charged far less than $30 to adjust your headset, and probably could have fixed the cassette as well. You may not know when to quit but I do. I am sorry to say goodbye.

But but but, how am I learning if some one always does the job for me?
Learning the hard way... Plus not quite sure my LBS would have charged less. I can find for 10$ what they are selling me for 30$!
The cheapo R501s I am riding with (bought 100$CA), they sell it 300-400$. I've had bad experience in the past, they milked me and now they lost a customer.

I am pretty confident this bolt is standard anyway... In the two LBS I visited the bolts from others sets were compatibles.

For the record, I couldn't find any replacement. I decided to cut with an hacksaw the bolt's head (vertically to the axle of the bolt) and then I used a flat screwdriver to tighten it. Now the headset/fork is stable and I believe I don't need to replace the bearings!

Thanks for you help!
Cheers

You have ignored the middle ground where you study, observe, take tentative action (gently), stopping as soon as something unexpected happens, question, study, etc.
The best solutions lie in the middle ground.

Sounds like he's got it sorted. I would still suggest removing a couple of the spacers before reassembly, though.
