I hate new suspension forks - 97 Marzocchi user with a problem

I guess this a question for the old timers out there...

I recently snapped off the damping adjuster on my 97 Z2 Bomber. Contacted Marzocchi about getting a new cartridge for it, and they said they no longer had inventory from back then. I've used this fork for a long time and never had trouble with it - even the weight doesn't bother me.

Marzocchi said they'd give me a deal on a crash replacement, which I'm going to call them about. But I checked out their forks and I'm a bit bewildered with the amount of forks they sell now. Most have too much travel for my Voodoo hardtail. And the shorter travel ones like the Marathons are air shocks, and I have a feeling set up is going to be a problem. I started to really regret smashing my Z2, since all I wanted was another one just like it.

Then I realized I could just buy an old Zoke on ebay - and if the steerer was too short (I need about 8 inches) I might just be able to swap the crown from my Bomber, which has 30 mm stanchions.

So my question is, has anyone out there ever heard of this being done? Any idea whether say the crown/steerer from a 97 Z2 could be used with a 98 Z2 (which seem more common), as long as the stanchions were the same diameter?

Any help appreciated -

Thanks

Yes it can be done. Marz may even do it for you in face. Especially old marzocchi's parts seem to be almost interchangable. I have seen some really odd setup with odd mixtures. Especially with the old bolt on parts.

You might be best to ask in an area where more people use these old forks. www.ridemonkey.com and www.mtbr.com (I can't believe I just recommended them) will have many users from that era.

I feel your pain. I have an old Litespeed frame that I am pretty happy with. It was designed for Mag 21 2" travel suspension forks. There are virtually no forks available in that length any more, and as you point out, there are no replacement parts for old forks. I've got a '98 Z4 that I liked, but it needs seals, and bushings to be usable. I couldn't find the parts I needed, so I just bought a NOS Rond/Magura 60mm travel air fork off ebay. Not as nice as the bomber, but it works, and it's way lighter.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check those out. Funny, I used to check out mtbr.com a lot when I worked in an office a few years ago - so many flashing ads and stuff on there now I can't even look at it.
