Well, we keep alcohol swabs around for cleaning rosin off of violin strings, so maybe I'll throw a few in the sag bag and try them on the next puncture.

Looks like simple green is basically a heavy alcohol plus detergent.

You're not sanding to clean. You're sanding to increase the surface area of the repair, which greatly increases the strength of the bond.
