Shimano M-505 Pedal Bearing Adjustment

I just bought a pair of new M-505's, still in Shimano wraps. The bearings were very tight, so I opened them up to adjust them. I was surprised to find no keyed washer between the cone and locknut, hence I can't get them locked in a new setting. This model does not have (as far as I can see) the axle/bearing assembly extractable from the pedal like almost all current Shimanos. It looks like the M-324 would present the same problem (unless they included the keyed washer you find in most pedals).
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Dick Hearsey
