How to clean left over break residue off your aluminum trim on the wheelset?
Can someone tell me what the best and safest way to clean the buildup of the brake pads being pressed against the aluminum sidewall on the wheels without damaging the aluminum material?

use 90 % or better rubbing alcohol on the rims to remove the pads buildup .

As above, high content rubbing alcohol along with a kitchen sponge with the ScotchBrite on the back. Works really well to get the residue off your brake tracks with no issues.

Any mild household cleaner should be up to the task - Fantasik, 409, etc. Will damage neither rubber nor aluminum. Or just ignore it - it's a bicycle, not a museum exhibit.

3M pad and alcohol, as others have stated. The alcohol is a good solvent that leaves no residue behind. A good pharmacy will have 91% or 99% alcohol for a couple bucks...it's good to have on hand for a lot of things.

+1 The black residue is aluminum oxide. Using a 3M pad will expose fresh aluminum to the air (contains oxygen) and just accelerate the process.
