Converting my Hybrid Specialized Sirrus
 

This is just in the thinking stages, but since the wheels are almost kaput, and the headset is just about dead, and the brakes just suck, I was thinking of stripping my bike down to the frame and converting it to a single speed. It's a Specialized Sirrus A1 sport. Is this possible?

This wouldn't a project I would do until fall, when I get back into doing more weight training in the off season and I'm crying everyday as I gaze out the window at all the snow.

I love my bike. I just can't see myself trashing it ever. It was my first bike in years. I'd like to keep it and do something different with it.

Vertical dropouts mean you need a chain tensioner which complicates singlespeeds. You can run bikes as 1x9spd for flat urban use and stripping rings off the chainset makes a surprising difference to the feel..
Its a nice frame, why not have some bombproof commuting wheels built up. You dont need flash upmarket components to make a great wheel.

Sounds to me like you've got CBTS (compulsive bike tinkering syndrome). Once it takes hold there really is no cure so you might as well just go with it and enjoy the ride.

If you're thinking single speed you'll save yourself some money in the long run if you just pony up for an eccentric rear hub from the get go for adjusting the chain slack. If you buy a singulator or something like that eventually you'll just have to add that cost onto the eccentric hub that you'll need when you decide to go fixed gear.

Oh, and I've got a clone "surly singleator" my guess is that it's not as quiet, Im tinkering with gearing tht will allow me to run without it. but it's sure fun having no gears...

I was just thinking about the idea. I definitely would like to build up my own bike and pimp it up real good. I just was thinking about using a SS for roller training, that's all. I ain't switching teams just yet, Scoob.

The next step will be fixed(need a different frame) but don't just ride it on rollers, when you get the right gear, these are great riding around bikes.

For now, I just want the ss. Perhaps when I head back to Italy, I'll see if I can get myself an old school, tore up Colnago or something that's in some scrap yard.
