If you have presta tubes, definately get a mini pump with a hose. That way you wont possibly break off the stem when pumping. BTW I too suggest you just use CO2 cartridges and use the pump as a back up.

I have the Second Wind pump-inflator. It gives you the option of pumping or using CO2. I have never used the CO2, but the pump part has seen action dozens of time. It works a treat.

I have a Lezyne Road Drive on one road bike and a Topeak Race Rocket on another and have used both a good number of times. They both work well, but I prefer the captive rotating hose and chuck of the Race Rocket over the Road Drive. I've also had the o-rings degrade and fall off the hose on the RD. I use the normal RR which has a slightly larger diameter than the RR HP. It pumps a bit faster but takes more force to get up to pressure.
