OOps!

It's been a LONG time since I've messed with a freewheel--had the tool years ago, but it seems to have escaped. Thanks, Gents.

It's a freewheel, not a cassette. No chain whip needed.

Or a bench vise. Mount the wheel and tool in the vise, then grab the wheel like a steering wheel and turn left.
Make sure the tool is fully engaged with the freewheel. With that splined remover, you shouldn't need to clamp the tool onto the wheel as you do with the notched type. |
Yea , I put a nut on top of the tool, or the QR skewer, its less of an issue with the spline interface
the Notch and Prong types it was important the tool not slip out.. then once the FW core broke loose from the hub, the QR or nut was Backed Off |
FYI, it will take a bit of "ooomph" to remove the freewheel. When reinstalling, smear a thin layer of grease on the threads first. Then carefully thread on by hand. It should go on easily. If it gets stuck, you may be cross threading, so back it off & start over. No need for tools to install.
