i just converted my SS MTB beater-bike to brake-lever free coaster brake rear hub. the worn-out chain is awfully loose due to "magic gear" losing it's juju. :) surprised the darn thing isn't derailing. just got back from a 20 miler and yet to have a problem with this sagging monstrosity.

pic to come. have to get my camera out.

back... i think it's that i've been riding SS so long that i've learned to never pedal when traversing bumpy terrain.

course i've been running a single front chainring now for 20 years, so i guess it's not surprising that a little experience helps to prevent inadvertent derailing.

edit: fixed major spelling errors. :)

apparently my old wheel does not have a cassette. it is whatever predates a cassette. the cogs are not separable. I have another one of these bikes. one is now a fully functioning single speed the other I would like to gear up. Im not sure how to change the cassette looking thing though.

probably a freewheel. they are still available, new, up to and including 8-speed. you'll need a freewheel removal tool for the freewheel you have. different manufacturer, usually different freewheel removal tool. or take to LBS to have it removed. don't need tool to install.

pic for an educated guess from the crowd as to what kind you have.

well, in my expert opinion, it's...uhhh... a rusty one? i really can't tell more from the pic.

was almost imposible to get off. and by taking it off and putting it back on the axel got tightened or something which made it not spin as well. Very happy that I found a used mavic wheel for cheap. As for the other GT bike with the same components I guess I might have to get a modern wheel with a new cassette to get it functioning. Although the old wheels say Japan on them which makes me assume they are good, they are actually garbage.

oh well. sometimes punting is our only option. :(

I haven't tried this but - ...

Go to the hardware store and get the shortest piece of 1 1/4 PVC pipe they'll sell you. If you don't have a saw guide, buy an auto hose clamp for a guide to get a nice, square cut. Make spacers from that to get a single cassette cog to line up perfectly with your chain ring.

If 1 1/4 is too small, use 1 3/8. I had a piece of that in my workshop. It fits a little sloppy but I'm pretty sure it would work.
