headset information

I am in the process of cleaning my headset and overhauling it with new grease. I took the very outer screw off and noticed it was screwing into another screw. What is this screw? I did unloosen and take it out. Upon trying to put the fork back in the compression ring would not hold in place. are these two intertwined? cheers

i'm going to assume you are referring to a threadless headset.

here's a video with what's most likely more information than you need. but take a look.

the compression plug in the video is, IME, typical, but they can vary somewhat in design. good luck.

and yes, i found i too had to take a look at the first one i came across a couple of times before i understood what was going on. :)

Typically compression plugs use a hex socket screw to tighten the expander, and that screw itself is internally threaded to do double duty by accepting the top cap bolt.

Start by setting the plug per spec, (or tight enough not to slip), then fit the top cap and adjust the headset.
