Personal log, star date....

So basically I'm just going to use this as a way to keep track of my exercise and possibly my eating habits. Feel free to chime in, give advice, etc, but it's mainly just for me to keep track of stuff and possibly set goals for myself based on information I gather through research and these forums.

A little bit about myself:

I'm 21 and have been a college student now for 3 years. Those first three years were spent finishing general education requirements for my BA at a community college, I also took a lot of technical courses related to IT / Networking which didn't contribute to the Associates at the Community College. This year, I transferred to Fort Hays State University where I will have finished my Bachelor's in Networking and Telecommunications administration in 3 semesters (including this one). I was always a heavier kid growing up just because of my body shape and height, I didn't actually start getting fat until around the age of 10 however. My family got into a bad car accident, my mom shattered her Tibial Plateau and spent the next 3 years in and out of physical therapy to be able to walk again. During that time, I prepared all of her meals, cleaned up the house during the day, etc. Being Home schooled made all of this a bit more convenient for me, but I guess it didn't help with my weight issue at all.

I now weigh about 430 lbs. Before I started dieting to prevent the onset of type 2 Diabetes, I weighed 550, that was two years ago I believe. I've tried to drop the weight in the past without much success, I had untreated sleep apnea, which caused severe muscle fatigue from minor workouts and would not allow the muscle to fully heal for weeks at a time. Now that it is being treated, I find it much easier to exercise on a regular basis. I'm hoping that through biking and perhaps some level of weight training to assist in my riding efforts I will begin to shed weight and get down below the 400 mark by spring of next year, if not earlier. And hopefully without destroying my knees along the way from running / walking lol.

EDIT, 9/16/2017: Mile goal for September: 100. MTD: 28.2. Started on the 9th..Off to kind of a slow start. Hopefully I can make it.

Just got my bike back from the shop, had a front brake thrown on, a kickstand and a bottle cage. I went ahead and ordered some items off of amazon to put together a patch / repair kit in-case I get a flat as I'm more prone to them at my weight.

I ended up riding around 4.5 miles on my first day, I was pretty impressed but I don't know if that's actually considered "decent" distance or not. Was pretty beat after that ride, the bike runs very smoothly now but I'm having some issues with my fit. I've never actually gotten myself professionally fitted to my bike, so maybe that's something I need to look into. I was very quickly and often getting sore hands and forearms. I've watched my grip and it isn't too tight, so I think it definitely either has something to do with the seat height or how I'm sitting.

Here's to tomorrow!

Went for another ride today, same trail, same starting point. I tried lowering the seat to combat the hand and arm pain issues I was having yesterday. It helped a lot, but the issue now is I feel too low on the bike and it's actually making my sitting far less comfortable. I'm going to try jacking the seat higher up next time and see if that solves both problems. Chances are I'm just going to get a professional fitting from my local bike shop.

I went 5.0 miles today! An improvement over yesterday by half a mile. I would have gone further but frankly I ran out of water and by the time I got back to the car I was struggling. We'll see how sore I am tomorrow, I may take tomorrow off and reserve all of that day for catching up with college work.

Just keep going. There are a few people here that started out having a hard time riding 1 mi. Now they are regularly riding a lot. Just keep improving little by little. It's like compound interest. It adds up bit by bit.

Good luck.

I hadn't really planned on riding today since I had some other issues come up during the day. Ended up having to visit the doctor for a antibiotic prescription, had some nasty mosquito bites on my lower leg that seem to have caused a skin infection.

Got home around 4 and ended up having to read some really dry law stuff about Telecommunications for school, etc. The urge to ride was too strong in the end though, ended up doing a quick run around my neighborhood, there's this steady 75 degree incline about 3/4 of a mile from my house and goes on for about 1/2 of a mile. so I ended up going down that, turning around about 1/4 of a mile past that and coming back up. Didn't make it all the way up without resting twice, but I'll get there eventually. Cyclemeter ended up clocking me at about 2.4 miles, not great, but not terrible as I hadn't planned to ride at all today and a good portion of it was up hill.

EDIT: Also, I appreciate the words of encouragement, it helps, believe me.

Managed 5.5 - 6 miles today. My cycle meter didn't start recording until halfway to the end, but I've ridden it enough now to know how roughly how far I had gone. Mile by mile gentleman, mile by mile.

EDIT: Goofed up while going up hill on my way back though, crossed the chain and ended up having it slip off the front gears completely. Simple fix, but for a minute I thought I was walking 5 miles.

7 miles today! I took yesterday off as I hadn't gotten around to cleaning my bike shorts, last thing I wanted was to ride without them lol. It was 92 out today as well, I feel good, good ride.

Only managed about 3.8 miles before I had to get picked up by a family member to go home today, had a bit of an accident. I'm fine mind you, but I couldn't keep riding at the time.

Been a bit slow the last few days, only ridden twice since my last posting, one was for 7.0 miles the other was for 5.0. I've hit a bit of a wall as far as increasing my distance. I'm sure it'll improve if I keep at it.

I've been a little inconsistent with updating this recently. Since my last post I've ridden I believe 5 times. for a total of about 27 miles. Two of those rides were 8.5 miles, the other two were lighter days to give myself some time to heal.
