Which size - 18" or 20" - conflicting information out there!

I am looking for a bmx bike for my 9 year old. Freestyle - street and park - not racing. All of the 18ers on Danscomp suggest that they are for kids 44-54" but I read on every forum post on the subject that the 18ers usually work for kids until they are 12 or 13.

My son is 54" and he is 9. Avg 9 year old is 52" average ten year old is 54".

I really want to get him an 18" because I think he won't be able to throw the 20" around.

So who do I believe?

IMO I would get the 20" since he will grow into the bike and still be able to maneuver it.

I know a former BMXer who used to ride an 18er. He was a state champ one year in his age class. Excellent rider. I rarely saw him on the 18-inch-wheel bike once he was large enough and had a nice 20-inch bike to ride instead. So while a 12-year-old might "fit" onto an 18er, I expect most will want to be on a 20-inch wheel size at the earliest opportunity and not later when the smaller bike no longer fits.

What does your son prefer?

I got him the 18" and it's perfect. Perfect.

Cool! Great to hear. Where is the photo? LOL. I'm sure he's lovin' the new bike. Good on you for taking care of him.
