You get what you pay for, I learned that the hard way with a Mongoose from Wal-Mart. Lesson: Never EVER take aluminum handlebars to a skate park. You will kill yourself.

Yes, because being of Hispanic descent automatically means that you can't get a quality bike...???

I think it was Bush Sr. that made up the "Hispanic" word, and most Mexicans I know don't like it. Of course, saying he can't afford a decent bike because he's Mexican is a poor stereotype on his part - as bad as any of us asking why he doesn't just steal one.

You do get what you pay for with new bikes. I happen to think you can get a little more than you pay for with quality used gear.

Now why has Queensrider expressed his love and admiration for this noob?

Can't say that any of the Mexicans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans that I know care less; the only people that seem to give much of a damn are the gangbangers that get arrested for beating someone up and then blame the (most often Mexican) police officer for racial profiling, as if a gang of white kids or black kids is going to be the most likely perpetrator of a crime against another Mexican street gang. But, anyway, back on topic...

We all are riding cheap bikes. A good bike is in the $5,000+ range, and fortunately our cheap bmx bikes more or less top out around $1,500ish. So, you can even get a really cheap $200.00 bike and be good to start of and learn some decent stuff.

So, yeah, plenty of cheap bikes out there that you should look at. Try the Specialized Fuse or the DK Cincinatti.

bmwryda05, here's a few steps on determining what you want /and can afford,

1st, plan on the best quality you can afford, then you won't regret your purchase.
Peace of mind goes a long way, and you'll have more satisfaction from your bike.

2nd, figure your budget. lets just use $200 as an example.

3rd, check out what's the best bikes available for that price at the Walmart, Target, and the discount Sporting goods....
make a list of the type of components each bike has and compare them...

4th, check out the entry level bikes offered at, say 3, Local Bike Shops (LBS)
Then compare the components...

note: usually the entry level bikes at bike shops are better, and have better components than walmart and such... but you will at least know what your paying you money for.

5th, if your looking at a $200 dollar bike, look at the improvements on the next model up from the same manufacturer. It could be $260, but in 2 weeks be on sale for $220, and worth the extra $20. (most likely tour $200 dollar bike would be $170) Always buy on sale if you can.

I reciently bought my mountain bike with help from this forum, but it took some effort on my own. I previously had Schwinn products in the +$300 back in the 80's and 90's. I reciently saw a Schwinn ad, did some research, and decided to avoid the schwinn for my price range. I decided on a much better bike for just a little more money and since there was a sale, I got the next model up!

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=107768

hope this helps from a middle aged white guy and best of luck!

Tim, it's all well and good that you offered him some advice, but he's only started this thread because he's bored. If he wanted actual advice, he would have qualified his question a bit better. His complaint that he can only afford a cheap bike because he's Mexican is ridiculous.
