Easy way to put grips on
 

I was wondering what the trick to geting grips on easy is. I remember reading that someone sprayed WD40 or something like that in there and the grips would slip on easy and dry out in about a minute so they are nice a tight. Just got some new snafu grips and they feel great.

After removing your old grips and carefully cleaning the bar area, spray a SMALL amount of WD-40 inside the new grip. You may have to muscle it on a little bit, but it will be ready to ride in minutes.

Since WD-40 is water based it will dry up nicely and will not harm the rubber the way petroleum based lubricants can. Technically, since it evaporates and is water based, WD-40 sucks as a long term lubricant.

I use wd-40 or hairspray.. your best bet is wd-40 and what I do is put the grip on the end of the bar and tap it on with a rubber mallet. just hit it with medium force, you dont have to kill it, and it will work its way on. Also, if you have access to an air compressor, jut stick that under the grip and it will glide onto your bars.

WD-40 or Liquid Wrench; they're pretty much the same.

Thanks for the help, and when all else fails read directions. I looked on the back of the snafu package and it says to spray 1 or 2 seconds worth of WD-40 down the new grip and get the grips where you want them and then let them sit for 6 hours. It says that it takes 6 hours for the glue to dry inside the grip. I got the freestyle grips and they are opened on both ends so I can put back my aluminum bar ends. I was thinking about doing the air compressor way, but I didn't think it would work if I had a big hole in the end. These grips are 140mm long. My last grips I shaved down to the width of my hand so these will feel a lot different. Thanks guys.

WD-40 isn't and never was intended to be a lubricant. It's also not water based. It's an extremely light petroleum based oil used as a 'water displacer' (That's what the WD stands for, kids) and since it's lighter than most oils it cuts them and evaporates, making it an excellent degreaser.

The quickest and cleanest way to get grips on and off is with a compressor, get the nozzle between the bar and the rubber and fire away. On and off in 2 seconds, no waiting for anything to dry, nothing to gum up when the grips get hot.

on all my mountain bikes i always used some good old spray hair spray, keeps your bike smelling pretty to!

No matter what you use to get your grips on, hairspray, WD-40, soap, Liquid Wrench...all chemicals leave *some* kind of residue behind. Some residues damage grips over time by eating away at the rubber and most (including hairspray) will get gooey and slippery if they get hot. Clean bars = sticky bars. :)

just put them on man like shove on them it might take a minute or strangth buts its worth it over time

i use an air compressor hose with a blower end...just slip the end of the hose on the end of your grip and it goes right on....i have tried hair spray before...it works but then if you want to get them off it is really hard....just use the air compressor.....

but...if you don't have an air compressor..then you are out of luck

That really doesent matter so much for bmx.. You get new grips every couple of months and a little residue really doesent matter unless small things like that matter to you.

Go to a gas station with a quarter pump.

All you need is water to wet the bar. If you need to remove them, pry a bit of the grip and spit water in. Twist the grip and work the water into the grip as deep as you can until it slides right off.

Hmmm, never knew that, always heard it as water based I will need to update my site on that.

Either way, WD-40 fits in my toolbox, the air compressor doesn't and in 17 years it has never done me wrong. I've never recommended it as a long term lubricant to replace grease or Tri-Flow.

Air compressor? Definitely a better way - if available.

Hairspray? As long as it is the right brand, some really gum things up and completely ruin grips.

I <3 WD-40. :D It's just that I see so many people who are confused about what it's used for, made out of, etc. Putting on grips? Sure. I'll buy that one. No harm in that. Packing your hubs with it? Not so good. :eek:

I got 14 pairs of Odi lock ons at less than 1/2 dealer cost. I'll let you guys worry about hair spray and WD-40.

Back in the day, we used some glue called "Gorilla Snot".

it used to be made by ATI now theres a new kind on dans comp, its like $4.99

our crew just use clear laquer spray(kind of clear spraypaint that you spray over a paint job). it sticks SOLID. we've none of us ever had a grip slip on us.
