Pretty much any brake is better than a Tektro brake.

Tektro brakes are ass, the bottom of the barrel. They're OE stuff that comes on low to midrange bikes. That being said, the current craze over billet aluminum is a little silly. Hombres with the fiesta upgrade are decent and affordable (threaded pad posts are a plus). 990s have been the standard forever but I'm not fond of smooth posts, makes adjusting prake pads a b*tch and a half. I'm totally sprung on Odyssey Evolvers with one key complaint: they use set screws to hold the cables instead of anchor bolts. Big no-no. It basically means you have ONE chance to get the cable in the right position, since a set screw will utterly destroy the cable once it's tightened down.

The springs are garbage, the arms are flexy, the stock pads are cheap, the anchor bolts are of inferior quality and design...there's not a single thing about Tektro U-brakes that isn't better on any of the other brakes mentioned.
