disk brakes

hey whats up guys i just bought a new frame for bmx trail riding and dirt jumping i wanted to put hydrolic disk brakes with iether 6 or 8 inch rotors has anyone ever done that and have you used a gyro with the brake fluid tank down by the brake itself or does it have to be in the brake handle like most full suspension downhill bikes
thanks J

There's no such thing as "Hydrolic disk" brakes. Disc brakes on a BMX is a stupid idea. Hydraulics will not work with a gyro. 8 inch rotors would be total overkill and a waste of money. And the reservoir is in the lever.

funn makes the only disc hub that will accept a 14mm axle. And good luck buying one seperate, they only come on one complete bike, and if your gonna run to rotors your gonna get two bikes (banshee scratch).

Also you should be treated with a short drop with a sudden stop for asking about hydros.

Bridgeport Mill? Drill press? Oh wait, you have all those tools, and more money than you could possibly need? Great, all you need now is some basic metallurgy skills coupled with design/engineering knowledge. Be prepared to put your money where your mouth is, and post some photos.

Just post photos of the brake mounts and brakes. You know you probably can't fit an 8" rotor inside the chainstays, right?

Besides the metalworking tools you'll also need several tools to put mounts on your frame and fork that are disc brake specific and are simply NOT worth it unless you plan on mass-producing these suckers. Not to mention the fact that you will basically have to *invent* and then create your own rear hub since a 110mm disc hub simply does not exist.

Welcome to the party, Snazz. If he actually attempts it, he'll ruin a frame and fork. Valuable learning experience in there somewhere.

I'd like to see before and after pics. Sound like a good experiement. Go for it and let us know how it goes. Sometimes very good thing come from seemingly strange ideas. I'd also l like to see a 1 to 2 inch travel very stiff suspension frame for bmx for the harsh landings. Plus it would save your back wheel. I could probably be done with out alot of added weight.

Many have tried, all have failed. As far a disc brakes go...besides the fact that discs are simply too vulnerable on 20" wheels, why the heck would anyone need that much stopping power on a BMX bike? Dirt jumpers aren't on their brakes very hard and rarely get up into even the 20mph range. Even the guys on 26" dirt jump bikes are pretty much all running mechanical discs. This just *isn't* downhill where it's reasonably possible to push 40-60mph over SEVERAL MILES. BMX doesn't even come CLOSE.

The bottom line is that disc brakes meet a demand that BMX bikes simply do not make.

Not to mention the fact that there's absolutely no reason for suspension on a BMX bike. If you're having trouble with "harsh landings", maybe you should go faster and not stack and/or ride like a total sketchball.

A single set of Avid SD3 V brakes can stop me on my cruiser, so a kid on a 20" has no need for a disc.
