Not asking what bike to get.
What difference does gear ratio make for the type of riding one does on a BMX? Is there an optimal ratio for particular styles? I have read the other posts regarding gear ratios, but nobody explains in detail why they prefer one over another for the riding they do.

2.75:1 is the classic one, it should be good for street, dirt jumping, park, etc. Some people like higher ratios so they can go faster without more pedal strokes, but you can't accelerate as fast. For flatland, they usually use a much lower ratio since they don't usually go very fast.

I made it because of this thread in foo where people were making tributes to this one guy's avatar, which is a purple termite thing. I'm going to change it back later.
