BMX Alleycats?

Yeah, this kinda belongs in Rides and Races, or even BMX, but no one'll read it there. Anyway, I'm imagining it as just a regular ol' alleycat, mostly street riders, dusting off their old 20" BMXs and hitting the urban streets with manifests per usual. 'Cept with a few tricky spots where off-road/BMX skills are essential. Like blazing through canyons or golfcourses or hitting trails or beaches, whatever your town has to offer. Maybe even a lap aroung the local BMX track!
Has anyone ever participated in anything like this? I think it'd be ****in' rad...

The issue is that riding a BMX bike more than say... a mile of high speed, becomes a huge effort of absolute will power that makes riding one of those crazy-arse 80's pursuit bikes look comfortable.

I mean sure I'd love to do something like that, but it'd have to be a really short race. Although someone would just show up on a cyclecross bike and absolutely dominate.

Two BMX riders participated in the Philly Valentines Day Alleykitten. Both did pretty well, except they got pretzels from the 711 and not a street vendor.

I used to ride 20-30 miles every single day on a BMX. It isnt uncomfortable
A BMX with the right gear and rider could easily win an alleycat.

Agreed. I have my BMX set up with the seat high (by BMX standards) and geared more for speed than acceleration. I ride all day on it, don't get worn out. It could happen.

We had an alleycat back at school in NJ and to attract more folk to ride, we had a BMX category. the route was made to give BMX an advantage in a few spots as well, also to make it more fun for rodies as well. A couple kids did pretty respectful for riding like 30 gear inches with seats all the way down.

Seth Holton handed EVERYONE their asses on one of his bmx bikes (he rides for Metal) at 666 this year. Literally every other bike (high end road and track bikes) totally blown away by him.

I honestly think that your bike of choice has little to do with your ability to win, it's endurance and experience.

do you have any more info on the race?

I remember Seth from ways back. I think in an older issue of Dig he talked about matching his bmx bike's gearing to his fixed gear or something like that.

Sorry to drop the hate, but imagine how fast these super-fast BMX guys would be on a bike that doesn't weigh at least 25 pounds and is actually built for going fast on the streets? WTF. If you like riding BMX, go ahead, that's awesome, have fun. But don't say that you can go as fast on a BMX as you can on a road bike/track bike because you can't.

Road bikes are faster inherently, but a BMX could win over mixed terrain.

I didn't mean to make you guys read this, I'm still trying to figure out where it was originally posted. I just liked saying 'Yes we will'. I think it must have been in ss/fg.
