BMX Bottom Bracket...

Let's face it... BMX Chainrings are awesome!

I have a fixed gear frame. I am considering installing a BMX Crankset and Chainring on it.

I would like a square tapered bottom bracket with 165mm crank arms.

I know the real issue is the BB threading. I see that some BMX cranksets come in "Euro" threading. Is that the same as "English" threading on a Track/Road frame?

I appreciate your help... thanks.

I saw a fixie today with profiles and it's the sex! http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2007/feb/Pt_2.htm
I'm pretty sure "euro" bmx = english on a roadie.

FuzzyRyder 02-13-07 10:42 PM

Yes, it's the same as euro. Some good cranks to look at are odyssey's 41 theremals and wombolts, and profiles.

I have profiles on my fixie too.

go with profiles.

i got mine used and they were ridden by 2 or 3 people before they came to be but there still in great condition.

Redline Device cranks are nice, light, and cheap.

I love the Profiles, do they come in a square taper?

FuzzyRyder 02-15-07 02:36 PM

No, but why does that matter?

exfreewheeler 02-15-07 02:55 PM

well, interchangeability, and I feel more secure with a ST BB.

Unless there is something you can tell me about BMX splined BB's compared to ST.

If i'm thinking the right thing...
You might be looking for something like Primo cranks. They have a square taper ish spindle.

Hardtoexplain.

FuzzyRyder 02-15-07 10:25 PM

I'd say it dosent matter at all, think about the abuse these cranks are made to take, you wont have problems thats for sure.

Well, they're three-quarter inches in diameter and they have forty-eight splines, for starters...

sbcdestroy 02-17-07 09:20 PM

a profile 19mm spindle is IMMENSELY stronger than any ST spindle... interchangabiliy? get profiles and never have to change them, ever. smoother, stronger, stiffer, bigger bearings, interchangable sprockets, look better than any rodabike or ss cranks.

exfreewheeler 02-19-07 06:04 AM

Are Profile BB loose ball or cartridge bearing?

eightdip 02-19-07 06:04 AM

Definatly not loose BB

I don't know about the stronger part. But you are definatly(sp?) are on key with the smoother, stiffer and cleaner looking.

A lot of companies are changing their gear over to spline.

ST is just less maintenance along with sealed bearings.

That's one of the qualities I want in a crankset, along with good solid strength.

mude 02-20-07 06:52 PM

profiles

Svr 02-20-07 07:11 PM

Profile cranks spin on four cartridge bearings (euro BB) --way better than any square taper could ever hope to be.

keep in mind, different crank manufacturers require different BB tapers. if you change cranks out there might be the chance you will have to change out the BB also.

FuzzyRyder 02-21-07 03:46 PM

The cranks usually come with the compatible bottom bracket.

What effect does the taper interface have on maintenance? I don't get it.
