Spotted dick? Apparently, the story goes like this: In England, it was common at one time to call all dogs dick. Most dalmations are white with black spots. Oatmeal (or porridge) with raisins reminded someone of a dalmation, hence it was given the moniker "spotted dick".

I've generally made it to amuse the local natives, who look at me quite suspiciously when I announce that I shall be bringing spotted dick for the Christmas potluck.
