Are mongooses Good or Bad?

Tell me what you think...

Ravensky 05-26-03 10:06 AM

I think they are good bike for a person that is beginning to start BMX, but after a while their brakes turn to crap

ste 05-28-03 06:39 AM

i think there quite good bikes but the brakes are abit crappy

nickpark 06-01-03 03:45 PM

theyre ok. i had one but theyre really heavy.

flatlinebmx 06-02-03 03:14 PM

good beginner bikes but u will want to move up soon ... i would rather look at a cheaper s & m or standard before i look at a mongoose...thats my opinion

dixsin142hs 06-03-03 01:26 PM

im nto trying to make you fell bad, but moggose suck . I was riding one one time and i hit this really big jump with it and the handle bars got bend.
I also think the frames are crap. Every thing on it pretty much sucks

haroBMX 07-08-03 12:15 PM

yea, they arnt all that..do what flatline said..go for a cheaper, like haro or hoffman or something like that..or even a gt....

OneTinSloth 07-08-03 06:16 PM

GT's aren't all that anymore either. mongoose, schwinn, and all the GT companies are now owned by the same manufacturer that makes pacific bikes. that's why you see them in department stores now. i'd say go with a hoffman or a haro, definitely try to get one with decent wheels and cranks so you won't have to buy a whole new bike when you upgrade the frame.

rgshill 07-24-03 11:49 PM

Personaly I would go with an Eastern, or Volume complete if you can. S&M are bad ass as well.

Turbonium 07-26-03 05:36 PM

they sell it at zellers (wal-mart like store) sooooooo don't go for it.

Mars118 07-29-03 03:46 PM

Mongooses seem kind of heavy to me. I really like Schwinn bikes oh yeah check out my poll BMX or Racing

bmx_rider_187 08-18-03 12:01 AM

mongoose sucks i had 2 of them and both of the frames broke at the seat post and crank

Riotte 04-22-04 02:41 PM

dude i dunno mongooses are for like gettin around i got one when i was 10 and i ttreated it lie **** and i still ride it even though its rusted to hell

Hunter 04-23-04 12:59 AM

Mongoose used to be a reputable name years back. however every since the pacific buyout, they became pure garbage plain and simple. If ou are wanting something inexpensive for a beginner bike look at Redline.

dirt dude 04-28-04 01:03 PM

the level 24 is a sick bike dude

#61 04-28-04 03:48 PM

anything but a mongoose

pjbaz 04-28-04 05:39 PM

I'm guessing (sorry if I'm wrong) that most of you are too young to remember the eighties...hint: there was no Hoffman, and no Mirra, but there was Roger Decoster!

Mongoose was (as mentioned in one earleir post) a great name in BMX back in the day. In fact, Mongoose was one of THE bikes to own in the eighties.

The best BMX I ever owned was a 1984 Mongoose Californian, strong as hell, light, fairly inexpensive compared to PK, Hutch, etc., and damn near bulletproof.

However, the quality has suffered since the Pacific incident. Supposedly (according to a rep.) they still make higher end bikes but you'll never see them on the shelves at Wal-Mart, and LBS won't carry a bicycle line that is on sale at Wal-Mart. Therein lies the rub.

I would suggest, as did everyone else above, finding another line of bike at your LBS and avoiding Mongoose...UNLESS you find an old "Looptail" frame from the eighties and build that up.

Old Mongoose good. New Mongoose bad.

Hunter 04-29-04 12:08 AM

pjbaz,
I once owned a Supergoose. I used to trash around on a Expert, and even did a few races on the Supergoose. However most of my other Mongoose memories are in a fog. Names like Torker, PK Ripper, Kuwahara, Redline, Hutch, etc are some I remember. One thing though Matt (Hoffman) is my age (37) and has been riding every since I can remember. He has also been building his own frames for about 16 years.

dirt dude 04-29-04 01:32 PM

have any of you got msn i need some more civilised(biking) convos

pjbaz 04-29-04 02:47 PM

Yeah, I know Mat has been around but he wasn't who he is at this point, I hadn't heard of him until the X games began (although I found his career went much longer). I was trying to put perspective on the newer generation. I guess I'm just getting old and need something to complain about...."In my day..."

Regardless, riding good, walking bad.
