Cassette hub--freewheel

I wasn't kidding when I asked what the difference was. Can someone explain it?

FitRider 921 04-06-07 09:54 PM

here

MadMan2k 04-06-07 10:48 PM

Cassettes have drivers that have the teeth and stuff on them and it's all one piece, and freewheels are the older kind. You need a cassette to go smaller than 13t, I think, so most nicer new bikes have cassettes.

tmowery18 04-06-07 10:53 PM

Thanks. Is it just preference, or are there pros and cons for each?

MadMan2k 04-06-07 10:56 PM

Freewheels *might* last longer, but if you need a small cog then you'd have to get a cassette.

tmowery18 04-06-07 10:58 PM

cog? sorry for asking so many questions.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:00 PM

so im thinkin of building up some of the cheapest wheels i can, poverty locash flip flop, some 16 dollar rims, and sme 14g spokes. how long do you give it?

FitRider 921 04-06-07 11:01 PM

I think they might take longer to build than to break.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:02 PM

im gonna have dans build them

FitRider 921 04-06-07 11:04 PM

I've heard bad things about Dans and building wheels. A few of the guys here have had rims with hops in them and my friend's wheels from Dans have all fallen apart after only a short period of time on them (although most wheels do need the spokes tightened shortly after getting them, they should still hold up for a while). If I were you, I would get them made from Empire.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:08 PM

these hubs these rims maybe these and these spokes

tmowery18 04-06-07 11:09 PM

How do you tighten spokes? I'm being serious.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:10 PM

spoke wrench,

tmowery18 04-06-07 11:13 PM

Oh ok, thanks.

FitRider 921 04-06-07 11:13 PM

go with the mx-22 over the other rims... and why do you want to buy such crappy wheels anyway? you are probably going to destroy the things in a pretty short amount of time.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:14 PM

just to do it

im not sketchy at all

FitRider 921 04-06-07 11:18 PM

well, if you've got some extra cash to spend, just go for it... or you could just save that money and use it to buy one good (front) wheel. I'm not too sketchy either, but crappy rims don't last so long, no matter how smooth you are.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:19 PM

i honestly cannot see my self spending more than 100 on a wheel

FitRider 921 04-06-07 11:24 PM

whatever floats your boat. if you are looking for a front wheel for under $100, go for the mosh- it's supposed to be somewhat good.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:32 PM

thing is, i need a rear wheel also. maybe i will use those cheap hubs and use a nice rim. haha, i should put a ribcage and ti spokes, on the cheapest hubs

wethepeople 04-06-07 11:39 PM

I have Ti spokes on my rear wheel, it's holding up fine.

Also, I'm running a pretty ****ty front wheel. Primo Bomb laced to a MX-22, it's holding up pretty good to, so I haven't replaced it yet either.

gnr rocker 04-06-07 11:45 PM

if i ever make loas of money, im gonna build up a bike completely of ti

studot 04-07-07 04:26 AM

cassettes last way longer than freewheels coz i went through 2 freewheels in like 2 months
they not good

stick with a cassette (Y)

eightdip 04-07-07 04:41 AM

Has no-one noticed that the first rim he suggested is a 16"

studot 04-07-07 04:43 AM

haha oh yeh i didn't cick on the links :P
