If only if like a teacher had a gun (and used it), many lives would have been spared.

Yeah it's like what is this world coming to anyway. Things in this world are not getting better as some people believe, but are just getting worse and worse. It will eventually come to a nuclear world war that will kill almost everybody on the planet.

Why would you ever want a teacher to have a gun? People keep saying dumb things around here.

the U of MN doesn't/didn't...with an 'open' campus it's hard.
most of the dorms are locked, but if your a student in that dorm, you'll have a key.

For situations like these. Actually in some places teachers are allowed to bring guns (they of course have to have licenses and stuff), just in case. And while they don't relish the thought of one day perhaps needing to use it on one of their students, they may end up having to do it anyway to save the lives of other innocent people.

If a law-abiding teacher had a gun (actually, if all law-abiding teachers carried guns) then there would be a reduction in the number of people dead in school shootings (if the shootings even occured at all after that).

With an idea like that, there would be a lot more shootings of innocent people than people being saved. It's not as great of an idea as you think it is. People with guns is usually not such a good thing.

Actually, think of it this way. If there were several police officers stationed around the schools, you would feel safer, right? Well, if the teachers had the same mentality as the police officers (law-abiding and all) and they had guns, it would be safer for the students. Of course this would never happen because some stupid people can differentiate between an armed citizen and a psychotic mass-murderer.

It's not going to happen. There should just be more security. That's all you can do.

Keep in mind, more gun laws and gun restrictions do NOT result in safer places. The bad guys (law-breakers) don't obey gun restriction and can easily aquire them on the black market. Once all of the law-abiding citizens turn in their guns, the bad guys will easily be able to do anything they want because the citizens can't defend themselves (police aren't always there to save us you know).

Yes, certain teachers should be trained and carry guns (not all teachers I guess) for security purposes.

And kids growing up should be spanked more. Time-outs don't work.

People with guns, for the most part, can not be instructed. Teachers should not have to be required to carry guns or have to get their license and it wouldn't help anyway. You basically said exactly what I said, plus some obvious information.

You are right, they shouldn't be required to, but if they want (and have a record of being a good citizen; no past offences) to they should be allowed to bring guns, and should know how to use it (not letting a student take it from them while they aren't looking and all).

And the study to support this?

The Red Lake shooting (here in Minnesota) had a guard AND metal detectors at the doors...the shooter just started shooting when he walked through the door.
