Homemade Freewheel

I have an old beater bike that I just painted and it had coaster brakes and a hand brake. I took the coaster brake off but now if I pedal backwards and then pedal forward there is slack somewhere. When I pedal forward it takes about a half of a crank for it to engage after pedaling backward. I've already hit my knee of the stem 2 or 3 times. How can I fix this?

Make a ghetto freecoaster.

You cant fix it, there aren't any pawls in it, its more of a clutch if you will.

depending on the type of coaster hub you can put spacers in between the bearing and the clutch so it engages quicker.

It's a beater bike, not a freecoaster hub. I doubt it's going to be worth all that.

But you could try. Just take it apart and pull the axle out. Watch this video for help:

How is it not worth throwin a spacer or two in. That would take almost no effort.

easy way out, BUY A NEW ONE!

You'd have to get spacers that fit well with the hub, and were just big enough so they wouldn't put any more stress on the actual sheild of the bearing, just the inner ring. It's hard to explain.

It's on a beater bike that I just painted, and it's a piece of crap. I was just wondering if it was supposed to be like that, and after watching the freecoaster video, I guess it's okay.
